âIâve been thinking itâs about time to sell the Corvair and start looking for another project,â Gordon says over morning coffee.
âI figured it was getting that time again.â I tingle with the anticipation of presenting him with the Nova. Happily, I take another sip from my cup.
âIn factââhe kind of hesitates hereââIâve got my eye on a 1969 Mustang over in Rosetown.â
A lead weight drops in my stomach.
âWhat, do you want me to wait awhile?â
âHmm?â I feign innocence.
âYou look kind of upset.â
âOh, that.â I make a face. âToo much sweetener in my coffee.â I put my mug on the stand beside me.
He nods. âSo, youâre okay with that?â
âWith what?â I fluff a pillow on the sofa and look back at him.
âWith me maybe buying the Mustang?â The sparkle in his blue eyes melts me down to my toes just the way it did when we were in high school.
âDo you think you should wait until you sell the Corvair?â I tear my gaze away from those perfect eyes and fidget with the cover on the arm of the sofa, acting only partially interested in the conversation. He must not get suspicious over my concern.
âYeah, I guess youâre right.â Thereâs a hint of disappointment in his voice. My heart constricts.
âIâm sure youâll have no problem selling the Corvair. Youâve got it running great, and it looks really nice since youâve painted it.â
He brightens. âYeah, I should be able to get it sold fairly soon.â He pulls out his pocket PC and pokes at it with his stylus. âI think Iâll just make myself a note to get the word out to a few dealers that Iâm selling it.â After he scribbles something, he looks up and smiles. âHoney, you should see that Mustang. Sheâs red and a real beaut.â
There he goes again with that car gender thing. âIf sheâs a beaut, what will you do to fix her up?â
âShe doesnât need much. A few rust spots to go over, slow-moving parts, that kind of thing. Iâll put her body back in order, give her ticker a check, then a scrub and a polish should do the trick. Sheâll be good as new.â He winks.
âCould you do the same for me?â
âHuh?â
âNever mind. Iâm thinking if you donât have much to do to fix her up, the car will probably cost more, right?â
âWell, you see, thatâs the thing. It does cost more. Thatâs why I hadnât mentioned it to you yet. We can see what I get for the Corvair and go from there.â
My mind scrambles to think of what I can do to hold Gordon off from buying that Mustang until I can give him the Nova. With our anniversary not that far off, Iâm not sure what to do.
âWell, Iâd better get to work, or I wonât be able to afford that Mustang,â he says with another wink.
We both stand and head for the kitchen. Gordon grabs his laptop, then bends over to kiss me. Itâs short and quick. âOh, let me try that again.
